Equipment
Equipment on this expedition needs to be entirely reliable and of the highest quality. Weight needs to be kept to a minimum without compromising safety. We use our expert knowledge to ensure the equipment brought on the expedition is the perfect choice.
We supply top quality team equipment, including tents, pulks/sleds, stoves, safety and communication equipment including satellite telephones, cooking equipment and medical supplies and will assist you as required in obtaining the right personal clothing and equipment.
Team members will be provided with a very detailed personal clothing and equipment list and recommendations upon making a booking. Our personal equipment list provided to team members is specific to Greenland conditions explaining what personal equipment you need, why you need it, and where you can get it. We know that whilst the amount of personal equipment required for this expedition is not substantial, it must be suitable.
A summary of the major required personal clothing and equipment is as follows: high quality sleeping bag comfort rated to -40°C, inflatable sleeping mattress, foam sleeping mattress, windproof jacket and trousers, nordic skis and boots, ski poles, ski skins, crampons, sled harness, winter clothing including insulated down jacket, sun glasses, snow goggles, and a specialised item called Piteraq Arctic Bedding.
Food
All meals and snacks are provided during the expedition. As food is an integral part of the expedition, we strive to provide the highest quality and nutritional food that is possible on a month long expedition across the ice cap. Due to the demands of this expedition, calorific content is approximately 5,500 calories per person per day and this is achieved in a weight of under 1kg per person per day. Even with such a high calorie diet, it is typical to lose between 5-10kg in body weight by the end of the expedition.
The value of expert and careful food planning cannot be overstated for an ice cap crossing expedition and we work diligently to keep our team fit, content and looking forward to every meal.
As we tailor food to each individual’s tastes, we will discuss with you and our medical advisor in detail your food preferences after you make your booking, to ensure that we provide you with the best possible nutritious and tasty food. We can easily accommodate vegetarians and most food allergies.
