Flight logistics
All of the relevant international flights can be made easily online. The dates and logistics below are for 2019. For 2020, logistics and dates will be similar.
Into Greenland:
To reach the start point of Kangerlussuaq situated in west Greenland, flights are with Air Greenland from Copenhagen, Denmark. This is currently the only carrier and route available from Europe or North America into Kangerlussuaq at this time of year. The flight on Sunday 14 April 2019 leaves Copenhagen at 11.00am and arrives at 11.40am (Flight time is 4 hours). This flight is not included in the expedition price and can easily be arranged on the Air Greenland website. As the start date of the expedition is fixed, this flight ticket need not be of the flexible type, however you should put in place trip cancellation insurance to cover you in the unlikely event you cannot undertake the expedition, through injury or illness etc.
Out of Greenland:
We ski into Isortoq to end our expedition on or about Monday 13 May 2019.
The route out of Isortoq involves flying by Air Greenland helicopter 60km (25 minutes) from Isortoq to Tasiilaq which is the largest village in East Greenland. From Tasiilaq, a second Air Greenland helicopter is taken 30km (10 minutes) to the village of Kulusuk. These 2 helicopter flights are included in the expedition price and arranged by us.
In Kulusuk, a runway enables planes to land for the onward flight on to Reykjavik, Iceland. Air Iceland Connect (not to be confused with Iceland Air) fly from Kulusuk to Reykjavik, Iceland, which is the gateway to East Greenland. The Air Iceland Connect flight leaves on Tuesday's, Friday's and Saturday's and can be easily arranged on its website, with date full-flexibility recommended. This flight is not included in the expedition price and is arranged by you. The flight departing on Saturday 18 May is the suggested exit flight.
From Reykjavik, daily flights to many European/North American destinations are possible.
If you require assistance in making any of the international flight arrangements, please feel free to contact us, as we have expert knowledge on the flight logistics in and out of Greenland and Iceland and can readily offer assistance and advice.
When making flight arrangements, please bear in mind that if we encounter very bad weather or other unforeseen delay on the expedition, the end date of 13 May 2019 may be exceeded by up to several days. Although we will do our best to avoid any such delay, your flight tickets out of East Greenland should be of the flexible kind to allow date changes. Similarly, a fast moving expedition in good weather conditions can complete the expedition in 23-27 days, hence the possibility of departing Greenland earlier than the itinerary dates.
Also, as an alternative, you may wish to spend a few days in either Isortoq or other East Greenland Inuit villages, such as Tasiilaq, Kulusuk, Sermiligaaq, Tiniteqilaaq, Kuummiut or Ittoqqortoormiit.
